Historical Commission Meeting
The commission will consider historic-preservation matters at 19 Prospect Street (determination of historic eligibility) and 40 Prospect Street (occupancy permit and review of executed preservation restriction). The agenda also includes a discussion of the Demolition Bylaw.
The Amesbury Historical Commission met on March 5, 2026. Major items included a project presentation by Graf Architects for work at Prospect Street and a completed-project review for 40 Prospect Street. The Prospect Street proposal described restoring historic fabric where possible, replacing vinyl windows with two-over-two simulated divided-light windows, removing later incompatible additions, and building a new residential structure elsewhere on the lot; commissioners noted the building’s local historical significance tied to early Prospect Street development.
The Commission voted 7-0 to determine that 91 Prospect Street is eligible for the HPSP. The Commission also reviewed the completed work at 40 Prospect Street and discussed ways to ensure compliance with preservation requirements during construction — suggestions included creating a preservation checklist to include with project approvals, improving documentation of architectural details, and conducting site visits during project phases. The Commission discussed possible changes to the Demolition Bylaw, including clarifying the definition of demolition, looking at other communities’ approaches (notably Newburyport), and considering changing the historic-eligibility threshold from 75 to 100 years; that discussion was continued to the next meeting. The Historic House Sign Program update noted testing of more durable sign materials. No public comments are recorded in the minutes.
