Cultural Council Meeting
Discussion and vote on Emily Jewett’s Main Street mural proposal; a vote to fiscally support the YWCA Great Newburyport’s Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Commemoration Breakfast & Day of Service; updates on Juneteenth and discussion of core values and goals for 2026.
The Cultural Council opened with officer elections for 2026: Ann Johnson and Sally Nutt were elected co-chairs, Margaret Leahy was elected secretary, and Joanne Barnes was elected treasurer (all unanimous). The council set Open Studios 2026 for November 14–15 and agreed, by unanimous vote, to act as the fiscal agent for the city’s 2026 Juneteenth celebration. The Poet Laureate transition was reported: Bryan Riley is the incoming Poet Laureate, a reception was held Jan. 25, and plans for Poetry in the Pines and other events were discussed.
During public comment, the YWCA requested co-sponsorship for its MLK Day of Service and asked the council to support a discounted speaker fee; ACC approved mentioning and a supporting stipend in discussion (administrative/payment details were handled as invoices). The treasurer reported a gifts account balance of $20,334 (with $450 encumbered for poet stipends and $495.95 in the Poet Laureate account) and a grants account balance of $0. Planning items discussed included hosting the grant reception (venue options and alcohol policy noted), Cultural Center housekeeping and scheduling issues, a public-art mural proposal from Emily Jewett (artist invited to present at a future meeting), and a brief marketing and grants update. The council also approved a short consulting session for Open Studios fundraising and discussed working groups, member orientations, and goals for 2026.
