Cashman School Council Meeting
Discussion and planning for the Cashman School Halloween/Fall Celebration are on the agenda.
The School Council meeting covered classroom instruction, student grouping, and school programs. Community members discussed Flexible Math Groups for Grade 5, questioning whether placements are driven by student data versus teacher needs and asking how frequently data are reviewed for movement between groups. Parents and staff reported that Grade 3 multiplication instruction and WIN intervention groups (classroom teacher, Title I Reading, special education) have begun; WIN is also occasionally used for catch-up time. Transportation timing has improved but occasional delays remain. Recess is reported to be going well with new Gaga Pit rules and scheduling. Integrated Arts and PE staff are delivering bullying curriculum and Second Step lessons; there was concern expressed about whether dedicated health lessons (specifically human body topics) will be provided. In Technology, staff are teaching digital citizenship, using a choice board of activities and adding a “word of the day” to morning announcements.
Event and program updates were shared: a Fall Festival STEM Day is scheduled with STEM activities from 1:30–2:30 p.m. and volunteers welcomed; after-school programming has started; AEFI grants will be awarded at month-end. The council announced that Grade 3 teacher Cara Ripley will be joining the School Council. The newsletter’s “Spotlight” feature was noted as well received. The meeting closed with the schedule for upcoming monthly meetings through June 2025.
