Commissioners reviewed three criteria for designation (listing in the historic resource inventory, association with notable historic figures, and cultural history) and examined documentary and physical evidence including an earliest construction date of c.1730–31, ownership history, Federal-period modifications c.1820, and the building’s use as a shelter by the Society of Friends from 1905–1963. Attendees noted that many original features remain intact.
After discussion of the property's architectural phases and historical associations (including links to the Bagley voyage and a Captain’s Well dated 1796), a motion to designate 230 Main Street historically significant was made and seconded.
