Amesbury Cultural Council Meeting
Agenda includes program updates and opportunities: grant recipient event sign-ups and Open Studios listings; a Public Art item focused on the “Carriages to Wheels” project; and miscellaneous matters including Amesbury’s 2030 Master Plan and a non-profit round table recap.
The Cultural Council met on May 7, 2024. Members reviewed routine financial and marketing reports, discussed outreach and event presence for upcoming community events, and planned grant-related outreach including a public input survey to set priorities for the next grant round (survey to be sent ASAP; responses compiled by August 30). Updates were given on Open Studios planning and coordination with the Chamber, and Art@CityHall reported a large submission round for the "All Mixed Up" exhibit with a reception tentatively planned for May 21 or 22.
Public art was a central substantive topic. A long-stored "Carriages to Automobiles" sculpture was brought forward as seeking a permanent home and members discussed potential sites (City Hall, school, or 21 Water Street). The council reviewed a revised rendering and proposal from Kate Delaney for the Amesbury Industrial mural; after discussion about design adjustments and logistics (including a separate boom-lift vendor), the council approved the mural budget—allocating $9,999 to the artist and $4,000 for lift rental. The Poet Laureate committee reported positive feedback on Poetry Month events, selected high-school poets for the Tapestry of Voices program with a reading planned for August, and a guest proposed a garden tour (referred to the Amesbury Improvement Association). Additional items included review of the draft 2030 Master Plan on the city website and planning steps for Open Studios and related sponsorship outreach.
