Amesbury Cultural Council Meeting
The Cultural Council reviewed routine program and grant follow‑up items and discussed upcoming events and public‑art initiatives. The treasurer reported outstanding reimbursements from 2023 and a current deficit; members noted two pending reimbursements (including payments related to a painted piano project) and discussed options for processing payment to the Chamber. Grant staff reported that all grant recipients have been contacted and noted one recipient (Council on Aging) is switching from a Valentine’s dance to an “Amesbury Senior Prom.” Council members agreed to invite grant recipients to the February mixer and to offer grant‑training outreach for applicants who were not funded.
Reports and project updates covered marketing, exhibition scheduling, poet‑laureate programming, Open Studios planning, and public art. Marketing plans include more frequent social posts and a Feb. 22 artist mixer at Barewolf. The City Hall exhibit “Beauty around us in Essex County” is scheduled to open Feb. 7 with 24 artists represented; a rotating photo near the mayor’s office will also be hung. The Poet Laureate described plans for monthly readings (targeting Massachusetts poets), collaboration with the library and downtown businesses, an April National Poetry Month collaboration, and potential stipend support (discussion of a $500 contribution toward a speaker series). Open Studios is set for Nov. 9–10 and volunteers/chairs are being sought. Public‑art discussion included an artist investigating wall ownership for a tunnel mural, a proposed mural at Lake Gardner beach bathrooms coordinated through the Recreation Department (which received MCC funds in Dec. 2022), and interest in forming a broader public‑art committee.
Other items raised under matters not reasonably anticipated included outreach from Cider Hill Farm about hosting arts programs and conversation with ECCF about regional cultural collaboration; members received praise for the council’s activity. No substantive ordinance votes, permit hearings, or budget appropriations were recorded. The next events/meetings noted were an artist mixer on Feb. 22 and the next ACC meeting on March 5.
