57 Main Street - Sign Permit

A single projecting (hanging) storefront sign is proposed for The Fruitful Fig at 57 Main Street in the Downtown Amesbury Sign District (CBD). The sign is a solid pine board 36 inches wide by 28 inches high with a 6‑inch carved relief depth, for a total area of 1,008 sq in (7.0 sq ft). It features a high‑relief, hand‑carved fig branch and leaves painted in natural tones above raised gold lettering, a rustic charred (shou sugi ban‑style) finish sealed with an exterior waterproof clear coat, and will be suspended from an exterior wall‑mounted wrought‑iron scroll bracket using two eye bolts. The sign is unlit; orientation (one‑ or two‑sided) is to be confirmed. The 7.0 sq ft area complies with the maximum primary hanging sign area under Table A of the Amesbury Zoning Ordinance (Section VII) for storefronts of approximately 14 feet or more.

The Amesbury Planning Board voted to approve the sign application at its August 24, 2026 meeting; an approval letter dated August 25, 2026 documents the decision and attaches the approved design. The Planning Board’s memorandum notes that the approval does not substitute for State Building Code review; the applicant must obtain a building permit from the Building Inspections Office and upload the approval letter and the completed licensing agreement to the Inspection’s application before installing the sign.
