Cultural Council Meeting
The council will consider use and programming of the Amesbury Cultural Center including a vote on a proposal, review Open Studios 2026, Art @ City Hall, and public art projects, and vote to fund a plaque for the new Poet Laureate. The meeting also includes discussion of the council's core values and goals for 2026.
The Cultural Council meeting focused on launching operations at the new Cultural Center and supporting upcoming arts programming. Members accepted the v1 Cultural Center proposal, which sets a $25/hour rental rate with a $100 half-day minimum, establishes a scheduling request form and calendar access process, secures weekly city-contracted cleaning through June, and includes neighborhood guidelines. The council discussed advertising the space, logging scheduling requests, and options for offering free rentals to Card to Culture holders; they also noted that Victoria will log scheduling requests and only ACC and Library emails can access the calendar.
Programming and exhibition logistics were a second major topic. The council outlined potential workshop topics (pricing artwork, grant writing, marketing, taxes, photographing art, writing artist statements, and an introductory “How to use the CC”), agreed workshops should start free, and voted to set aside $500 for speaker fees. They discussed gallery show formats, sitter assignments, and a proposed hanging system; members authorized up to $1,000 for hanging-system supplies. Other actions included placing a $200 trolley deposit for Open Studios 2026. The grants program was also discussed: the MCC Creative Experiences grant will be reapplied for (aiming lower than last year), feedback cited a need for more BIPOC-centered programming, and a grant reception is scheduled for March 24. Public comment consisted of several thank-you notes from grant recipients.
