RVCS Accountability Committee Meeting
Committee reviewed MCAS and state accountability results showing River Valley Charter School above state averages (grades 3–8) and an overall shift from “moderate” to “substantial” progress; the committee requested a parent townhall and further disaggregated-data review and scheduled a special meeting Oct. 17 to complete remaining agenda items.
The committee received a presentation from Jane Patterson reviewing River Valley Charter School’s MCAS results and state accountability measures (Achievement, Student Growth Percentiles, and Chronic Absenteeism). Across grades 3–8 combined, RVCS performed above state averages in English, math, and science; the school moved from “moderate progress” toward state targets last year to “substantial” progress this year. There were notable gains — including civics outperforming the state by 33% (grade 8 only) and several grades returning to or exceeding pre-pandemic ELA and math levels — as well as areas of decline such as some subgroup drops and decreased female math scores. Administration noted chronic absenteeism improved and attributed middle-school gains (grades 7–8) in part to the Montessori sequence and students’ familiarity with testing.
Committee members emphasized the need to contextualize results for families and to track subgroup and cohort trends (including pandemic cohorts). The committee requested a parent workshop/townhall to explain the MCAS outcomes and reassure parents, asked that non-parent board members follow up with administration to review disaggregated MCAS data, and confirmed the MCAS presentation will be shared at the October board meeting. Because the meeting exceeded its allotted time, the Accountability Plan update and Accountability Dashboard were not discussed and the committee scheduled a special Accountability Committee meeting for Friday, October 17 at 5:00 PM to cover the remaining items.
