Cultural Council Meeting
Approved distribution of $12,500 in Cultural Council grants to community arts projects (including Arton the Lawn, the Market Square mosaic workshop, Amesbury Chamber summer music series, and others); council also approved separate funding for a poetry readings series. The Cultural Center renovation was reported as contracted and a launch meeting is scheduled.
The Cultural Council met on December 3, 2024. Members reviewed financial reports and program updates (Treasurer reported gift and grants account balances), recapped a successful Open Studios weekend (approximately $3,000 net and strong business sales, with signage and wayfinding noted as an issue), and discussed marketing/newsletter timing. Public Art updates included a delay of the stairs project until spring, ongoing tile workshops, and a community mosaic tile workshop tied to the Market Square tunnel project. The Poet Laureate support group is organizing via Zoom. Several members of the public spoke during comment time, requesting a Juneteenth celebration for Amesbury and describing proposals such as a pollinator garden, an ovarian cancer lantern festival, and other local arts activities.
The meeting’s principal actions concerned grant funding: the Council reviewed priorities (emphasis on free/affordable programs for Amesbury residents and placemaking) and approved $12,500 in grant awards across a list of community projects (51 proposals were received). The Council also voted to fund a poetry readings series separately from the grant round. An update on the Cultural Center noted the city has contracted a contractor to renovate the space and a launch meeting is scheduled; the Mayor will provide a timeline. Other operational notes included plans to reintroduce a silent auction at next year’s Open Studios and to pursue corporate sponsorships for the event.
