Open Space, Natural Resources, and Trails Committee Meeting
Committee will review the Woodsman-prepared Trails Assessment report for the City of Amesbury and prioritize action steps for trail improvements; the Battis / Powow Hill report is noted as in progress.
The committee met to review administrative and project items related to local open space and trails. Members unanimously approved the minutes from September and approved payment to Woodsman Inc. for the commissioned trail assessment. The Woodsman report, covering conditions and recommendations for trails at Town Forest, Woodsom Farm, Battis Farm, and the Powow Conservation Area, was presented and discussed in detail.
Discussion of the trail assessment focused on prioritizing hazards and cost-effective actions, itemizing recommendation types across sites, and improving signage and trail markings—particularly in the maze-like Town Forest where a marked trail segment may cross private property and requires clarification before further blazing. A volunteer-led trail-marking plan was offered by a representative of local trails and lake groups, who also noted plans to build a new kiosk and update the Town Forest map. Members reported that a draft land-management report for Battis Farm and the Powow Conservation Area is expected in November and that a public forum on that report will be held in December in place of the regular November and December OSNRTC meetings. There were no public comments recorded at the meeting.
