Open Space, Natural Resources, and Trails Committee Meeting

The committee heard several public presentations and reviewed ongoing open-space initiatives. Chair Sherwood reported City approval for an invasives demonstration project at Woodsom Farm and outlined planned volunteer work parties in late April and early May to begin plant identification and initial removals. Two citizen-led improvement proposals were presented: a phased landscape and accessibility plan for Batchelder Park on Po Hill (including a perimeter path, summit gathering area, native plantings, and low-maintenance gardens) and a volunteer-driven Deer Island Park plan focused on trail widening and repair, invasive species control (phragmites, bittersweet, poison ivy), parking-lot improvements (post-and-rail guardrail estimated at $6,000–$7,000), interpretive signage, benches, and water-safety measures coordinated with public safety officials. Discussion emphasized accessibility standards for trails, parking constraints and potential easements, long-term invasive management, and the need for volunteer stewardship and low-water plantings; CPA funds were identified as a potential funding source for both projects.

Operational and governance items included a bench-donation siting discussion that raised siting, erosion, and Conservation Commission review considerations for riverfront locations; DPW interest in a watershed-scale river corridor clearing approach was noted. With a resignation previously submitted by a member, the committee appointed Craige Hird as its representative to the Community Preservation Committee (motion approved unanimously). There were no public comments during the meeting; members commended the park proposals and encouraged phased development and continued coordination with city staff and volunteer groups.
